The road from Richmond, Part 2

Luray Caverns in Virginia

If you’re setting out from Richmond, VA, adventure is never far.

With Baltimore, Philadelphia, DC, and Charlottesville all within a reasonable driving distance, there’s no shortage of history, culture, and non-Richmond, big-city fun to be had nearby.

And if it’s a return to nature you’re pining for, well, there’s no shortage there either. National parks, caverns, beaches—it’s all a 15-passenger van rental away for the intrepid traveler seeking new experiences with friends or family by their side.

Some more destinations worth consideration:

George Washington National Forest

George Washington & Jefferson National Forests

Two national forests. 1.8 million acres of land. Well over 100,000 acres of designated wilderness.

170 or so miles from Richmond, this nature lover’s paradise offers 50 campgrounds and 2,000 miles of hiking and biking through Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

From 325 miles of Appalachian Trail to 66-foot waterfalls to spring-fed lakes and trout streams, it’s one of the largest and most stunning stretches of public land in the Eastern U.S. And exploring even a small fraction of it is something you’ll never forget.

Kerr Lake Recreational Area North Carolina

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

113 miles from Richmond, this 500,000-acre North Carolina reservoir stretches well into Virginia.

With multiple boating ramps that offer 24-hour access to the water, some of the best fishing in the Eastern U.S., and beaches and picnic areas galore, Kerr Lake’s the breath of fresh air you’ve been hoping for.

And if it’s a family trip you’re after, you’ll find quite the bounty of kid-friendly activities. Picnics at Occoneechee State Park, walks through the butterfly garden at the Tanner Center, pontoon boat rides—it’s all right here.

And it’s all just a quick road trip away.

Luray Caverns in Virginia

Luray Caverns

Looking to get back to nature?

Hoping for something a little more… subterranean?

124 miles from Richmond, the Luray Caverns comprise one of the largest cavern complexes in the U.S. and take you on a 45-minute, 1.5-mile journey through cathedral-sized rooms, towering stone columns, and crystal-clear pools.

But there’s more to this popular Virginia tourist spot than stalactites and stalagmites.

There’s the Garden Maze—a half-mile path that diverges at over 40 points.

There’s the Great Stalacpipe Organ—the world’s largest instrument.

There’s even a multi-level ropes course—for those who’d prefer being (way) above ground to trekking through underground caverns.

Which is to say, there’s fun to be had here at a variety of different altitudes. Richmond’s unique proximity to such a diverse range of outstanding outdoor activities makes it an ideal starting point for your next adventure. And no matter where you head or who you bring along, you’re only a 15-passenger van rental away from the time of your life.
